Frequently Asked Questions about the Safer Drivers Course

 

In this FAQ we hope to provide young learners and parents, of teenagers and young adults learning to drive, a better understanding of what the Safer Driver Course is all about. The ultimate goal of the experience is to provide young drivers a valuable and positive way to become safer drivers. The following answers resolve some of the questions we frequently get from learners and parents, and hopefully they provide the explanations you need. If not, feel free to get in touch.

PCYC NSW is committed to doing our part to provide a Covid-safe environment for you and your children. Please help us by following the NSW  guidelines that have allowed us to reopen:

  • All members and visitors must record their visit using the NSW Health QR code (COVID registration).
  • All entrants to the SDC course over the age of 16 years need to be fully (double) vaccinated in order to participate in the course, until 1 December 2021, as set out in the NSW government guidelines. Evidence of vaccination status will be required in the form of a covid-19 digital certificate displayed through the Medicare App, Service NSW app or equivalent smartphone wallet, or a printed version of the covid-19 digital certificate or immunisation history statement, along with accompanying photo ID.   • Students are required to wear masks in all indoor recreation facilities - including inside the car. For full mask regulations and exemptions, check the NSW guidelines here.
  • Social distancing must be adhered to - the 1 in 4 sqm rule applies.
  • Parents are required to scan in at drop off and collection. A mask is mandatory when entering the premises (for 12 years and above).
  • Anyone who is unwell, has signs of runny nose, cough, or fever should not attend a SDC course. Please stay at home if you are feeling unwell.

No. Eligible Learners can only attend the course once.

There is a fee of $140.00, including GST, per learner for both modules of the course.

Learner drivers must hold a valid NSW learner licence, be under 25 years of age and have completed minimum of 50 hours of actual on-road driving experience. Total hours cannot include any credit hours gained under the Structured Professional Lesson (3 for 1) scheme.

You must be under the age of 25, hold a valid NSW Learner Licence and have completed 50 logbook hours (of actual on road experience) to be eligible for the course.

Unfortunately, no, you must hold a valid NSW Learner Licence and be able to satisfy all eligibility criteria stated above.

The Safer Drivers Course will help you better understand low-risk driving strategies such as speed management, gap selection, hazard awareness and safe following distances; ultimately preparing you for when you drive unsupervised on your Ps. You will also receive 20 hours of Logbook credit once you complete the course.

Make sure that you bring your NSW Learner Licence and logbook; all other course materials will be supplied on the day. A dual-controlled vehicle is supplied for the Module 2 session.

No, all instructors are allocated depending on location.

The Safer Drivers Course is 5 hours in duration over two modules. Module 1 is a three-hour group discussion session with other L platers, where you’ll learn how to manage risks on the road. Module 2 is a two-hour in-vehicle coaching session with a Coach and another learner so you can learn a range of practical low-risk driving behaviours.

Depending on your chosen location, Module 1 and Module 2 may be available on the same day. Please check with your local PCYC regarding the timing of Module 2 sessions. You must complete both sessions within one month to be eligible for the 20-hour logbook credit.

Depending on your chosen location and the number of other Learners on the course you may have the option of doing your Module 2 session in a manual vehicle. Please check with your local PCYC regarding the availability of manual vehicles.

Once you have completed minimum of 50 hours of actual on-road driving and 10 of these hours must be night hours (of actual on road experience and not credits gained under the 3 for 1 professional instruction scheme).

Yes. PCYC are an Approved Provider of the Safer Drivers Course for learner drivers.

Drivers with disabilities are eligible for the course provided they satisfy the eligibility criteria. Please contact your local PCYC to discuss any special needs and how the Module 2 session can be conducted.
